President Donald Trump. (Source: Wikipedia)

We are pleased to invite you to an American Club dinner speech on The Trump Presidency: Risks and Opportunities from a German Perspective.

It seems we are moving into uncharted political territory, full of uncertainty and foreboding. One cannot help but wonder how 2017 will play out, and how President Trump will react to these challenges. In the face of these risks, might there be a bright side? And, what does this all mean to Germany?

Here to address these questions is Prof. Dr. Joachim Krause, Director of the Institute for Security Policy at the University of Kiel. Until recently, he was Professor for Political Science at the University of Kiel. He has taught at Johns-Hopkins-University (Bologna Campus), and he is editor in chief of “SIRIUS-Zeitschrift für strategische Analysen“. He was member of the Executive Board of the Aspen Institute Germany and is chairman of the Scientific Board of the German Council on Foreign affairs. His recent publications include: Yearbook on Terrorism 2015/16 (2017); Routledge Handbook of Naval Strategy and Security (2016)Afghanistan, Pakistan and Strategic Change. Adjusting Western regional policy (2014); The EU, the UN and Collective Security (2013); Iran’s Nuclear Programme – Strategic Implications (2013).

Dr. Christoph von Marschall (Source: Der Tagesspiegel)

The US Midterm elections are less than two months away, and are surely to be the most closely watched of its kind in living history. Democrats are hoping for a “blue wave,” while Republicans are looking to hold on to the majorities they enjoy in the Senate and House of Representatives. What are the implications of either outcome, and how are the major races polling?  Will President Trump and his party’s majority be vindicated for their first two years of policies, or is there change in the air?

Dr. Christoph von Marschall will address these question and others with his speech titled Trump and the Midterms. Since 1991, our speaker has been reporting for Der Tagesspiegel, currently as Diplomatic Correspondent, and served many years as the lone German newspaper correspondent in the White House Press Corps. He is the author of several books, including: Barack Obama. Der schwarze Kennedy, Michelle Obama. Ein amerikanischer Traum, and most recently Wir verstehen die Welt nicht mehr: Deutschlands Entfremdung von seinen Freunden. He also writes for Cicero and The Atlantic Times.

You find out more about Mr. von Marschall here.

The US Midterm Elections: Implications for Trump and Merkel @ Park Hyatt Hamburg
Nov 1 @ 6:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Robin Alexander. Quelle: Die Welt.

The US Midterm elections are rapidly approaching, and people all around the globe are following the daily developments in Washington, including the suspenseful Supreme Court Nomination process. Democrats are hoping to break the Republicans’ monopoly on power, while Republicans are going all out to maintain the majorities they enjoy in both chambers of Congress. Meanwhile, in Germany, the ruling coalition is showing signs of cracks. Will the US elections influence the stability of the seemingly fragile grand coalition? How will they affect the Germany Landtagswahlen, and what will be the longer term impact on the German-American relationship?

Robin Alexander will address these topics five days before Americans head to the polls in a speech titled The US Midterm Elections: Implications for Trump and Merkel.

Mr. Alexander was the founding editor of Vanity Fair in Germany, and in 2008 became a journalist for Die Welt and Welt am Sonntag. He appears regularly on TV talk shows hosted by Anne Will, Sandra Maischberger and Maybrit Illner, due to his high level of expertise on national politics and topics relating to Chancellor Merkel. His book “Die Getriebenen — Merkel und die Flüchtlingspolitik: Report aus dem Innern der Macht” reached the top of the Spiegel bestseller list last year.

You can find a “taste sample” here – “Die Entfremdung von Europa begann schon vor Trump” von Robin Alexander.
