Speech on G20, Climate Change, Trump – in the context of Micronesia. @ Museum für Völkerkunde Hamburg
Jul 6 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Larry and his crew in front of the Lamotrek Sail.

Rising Sea Levels are not a myth, nor is Climate Change – despite the fact that some may claim otherwise. The people of the Pacific Islands in the Federated States of Micronesia are first hand witnesses to the devastating effects these issue bring today – and can tell from experience what it means for their society and anyone around the globe. Especially those living near the sea.

It is our great pleasure to invite you for a evening speaking event with Mr. Larry Raigetal, founder of Waa´gey in Micronesia. Larry made the long trip from Micronesia to bring us the story behind this unique sail.

The mission of Waagey and Mr. Raigetal personally is the preservation of the regional arts and crafts and traditional craftsmanship, to maintain the cultural heritage of the Micronesian Pacific Islands. But also to create awareness for this mission to becoming harder and harder due to global influences (not to say “globalization”) and climate changes. In the region, the sea levels rise 1,5cm every year – a direct, measurable threat to the life on remote coral island atolls.

Mr. Raigetal and his team have created a sail on the remote island of Lamotrek, a sail made in the traditional way, which was almost a lost skill. This sail is touring the world and has reached Hamburg, to be on display at the Museum für Völkerkunde, where Larry will be kind enough to speak to us and give us some context on this interesting matter.

The timing could not be better since G20 happens the same week with Mr. Trump in town.

The event itself is FREE OF CHARGE, but REGISTRATION IS REQUIRED for attendance (please RSVP immediately to assistant@americanclub.de).

Please note that the Museum will charge the standard entry fees (EUR 8,50). The Museum is located at Rothenbaumchaussee 64.

Please also note that you should plan to arrive in good time, due to restrictions / demonstrations / road closures in the context of G20.

Due to the short notice of this event, there is no catering planned but the Museum hosts a Restaurant for snacks and drinks. Larry will be happy to mingle and answer any questions you may have in that set up.

You can already learn more by watching this video about Larry´s undertakings.

The US Midterm Elections: Implications for Trump and Merkel @ Park Hyatt Hamburg
Nov 1 @ 6:30 pm – 10:00 pm
Robin Alexander. Quelle: Die Welt.

The US Midterm elections are rapidly approaching, and people all around the globe are following the daily developments in Washington, including the suspenseful Supreme Court Nomination process. Democrats are hoping to break the Republicans’ monopoly on power, while Republicans are going all out to maintain the majorities they enjoy in both chambers of Congress. Meanwhile, in Germany, the ruling coalition is showing signs of cracks. Will the US elections influence the stability of the seemingly fragile grand coalition? How will they affect the Germany Landtagswahlen, and what will be the longer term impact on the German-American relationship?

Robin Alexander will address these topics five days before Americans head to the polls in a speech titled The US Midterm Elections: Implications for Trump and Merkel.

Mr. Alexander was the founding editor of Vanity Fair in Germany, and in 2008 became a journalist for Die Welt and Welt am Sonntag. He appears regularly on TV talk shows hosted by Anne Will, Sandra Maischberger and Maybrit Illner, due to his high level of expertise on national politics and topics relating to Chancellor Merkel. His book “Die Getriebenen — Merkel und die Flüchtlingspolitik: Report aus dem Innern der Macht” reached the top of the Spiegel bestseller list last year.

You can find a “taste sample” here – “Die Entfremdung von Europa begann schon vor Trump” von Robin Alexander.

The speech will be in English and accompanied by a three-course meal and fine wine. Register simply by sending us an email with your name(s), and kindly transferring payment of 35€ per member or 45€ per guest to:
